Literacy Program

The Murphy Centre, with funding from the Department of Education, offers foundational literacy programming for adults in St. John’s, Gander, and Corner Brook. Planning is underway for a site in Happy Valley-Goose Bay. Integrated partnerships with The Gathering Place in St. John’s, the Salvation Army in Gander, the Vine Place Community Centre in Corner Brook, and the Labrador Friendship Centre in Happy Valley-Goose Bay support the Literacy Program through the provision of space and/or promotion and recruitment efforts.

The Literacy Program offers individual and/or group instruction in:

  • Foundational literacy and numeracy
  • Digital literacy
  • GED preparation
  • Life skills

In St. John’s, the Literacy Program is onsite at The Gathering Place (TGP) and is intended for Guests of The Gathering Place. In Gander and Corner Brook, the Literacy Program is open to any adult over the age of 19.

There is no cost to participate in the Literacy Program and in-take is continuous.
